Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival
Thank you to everyone who helped to organise, who took part in, and who came along to Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival 2014
Hundreds of cartoons and caricatures were drawn during this year's Cartoonists Live Day on Saturday 26th April, lots of children and adults had a go at creating their own comic strips and cartoons, and even more people enjoyed the cartoons in the themed exhibition.
Here's what some of our visitors said:
- 'Fantastic. I don't have to use stick people ever again.'
- 'Great fun, learnt a lot, lovely to have something that adults and children can come and enjoy'
- 'Perhaps I can draw!'
- 'It was the best thing ever!'
The date for the 2015 Cartoonists Live Day is Saturday 18th April and the theme for the whole Festival is Style. Meanwhile follow us on Twitter at @shrewstoonfest for updates and click here to see a selection of cartoons from previous Festivals.
Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival is the only event of its kind in the UK. It features an exhibition of cartoon art and a cartoon trail around town throughout April, and a day of live cartooning activity. Each year the Festival adopts a theme for cartoonists to interpret. The result is a lot of original cartoons showing a lot of different styles and humour gathered together in one place.
The 'Cartoonists Live' Day in The Square is a one-of-a-kind event where you can see artists at work, creating giant cartoons, drawing caricatures and leading 'have-a-go cartoon workshops in town centre venues. Professional cartoonists from around the UK descend on Shrewsbury to caricature and cartoon for the public. The themed cartoon exhibition offers a great opportunity to see and buy original cartoons and quality prints, or just to enjoy the many different interpretations, gags and artistic styles of the best UK cartoonists. Most events are free.
"Cartoons are life affirming. I don't think we realise just how much joy they can bring as well as being a powerful weapon. Cartoons like songs can pack a huge punch as well as reflecting the world about us." - Alex Lester, BBC Radio 2 broadcaster, Festival patron
Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival patrons are: Libby Purves, Andrew Marr, Alex Lester, Martin Wainwright and Phill Jupitus. The late Professor Colin Pillinger was a patron of Shrerwsbury Cartoon Festival and an enthusiastic supporter of cartoon art. He will be missed and our sympathy goes to his family.
